Gilded Gutters
We recently went to Lucky Strike. This franchise mixes the bowling alley with the nightclub to create an experience that is dark, tacky, overpriced, and yet still fun. My favorite part was the bathroom posters of quotes from magazines like Us and People about celebrities hanging out at other Lucky Strikes to remind you that the place rocks -- and you're cool, too, for choosing to hang out there. It reminded me of an upscale soul food restaurant. You know, the type of place where they charge $25 for fried chicken and mac'n'cheese on a Fiesta plate. The food may taste good but it still can't hold a piece of fatback to the same thing pulled from under a heat lamp for $7 at a motor inn by the interstate. So, yeah, we paid $31 to basically bowl two games under a black light -- and I would do it again.

These Are Not The Mailboxes You're Looking For

Despite the dubious marketing purposes of these mailboxes for expanding the empires of the USPS and George Lucas, I think they're fun and find them much more attractive than the standard blue. I would actually encourage the post office to develop this idea further and turn mailboxes into an ongoing public art project.

DC Goes Green. Al Gore mistakenly rejoices.
St. Patrick may have done it in Ireland, but I don't think even he could drive all the snakes out of the U.S. capital.
So, they just have this parade and get drunk instead.
